Magic Carpet Suitcase

Portrait of Vesper Stamper

From the artist

I adapted the design for this vintage suitcase from an illustration in my picture book with Daniel Nayeri, A Knot is Not a Tangle. In that spread, a beautiful royal Persian carpet comes to life. Flowers, jewels, birds and animals become real and fly off of the carpet into a new, magical and real adventure. I wanted to reflect this for children experiencing the foster care system, because as someone who had to navigate a difficult childhood myself, books and illustrations really were my road map toward a different, more hopeful future.

Vesper Stamper writes and illustrates novels, picture books and graphic novels. Her debut illustrated young-adult novel, What the Night Sings, was a National Book Award nominee and won the Sydney Taylor Book Award. She holds degrees from Parsons and the School of Visual Arts and teaches illustration at SVA.

Exhibited artwork starts conversations. It is not the luggage given to children.
